Bala Weekend

11th February 2009

Jan 23-25th 2009 was the club bunkhouse weekend from Aberystwyth to Bala where twelve members took part in at least one of the three rides on offer. The first ride was the journey up, on the friday afternoon run off in glorious weather (for january), with a tailwind to boot and we rolled into town after just on three hours of riding.

After an hour chewing the fat in the cafe we headed to the bunkhouse where a large bedroom, partitioned with ply board was shared by the majority with a couple of riders choosing the slightly more luxurious b&b across the street!

Saturday saw Martin Jones & Paul Brewer join the Bala residents for a 72 mile epic to Trawsfynydd, onto Harlech where some tried the notorious 40% hill in the town, and actually managed it! Barmouth’s best cafe was then frequented for another hour or so and then the team headed to Dolgellau and back to Bala where Dewi Hughes took the ‘bunch sprint’ into town.

Sunday saw the return to Aber, this time with the double delight of a slight headwind and the humungous Bwlch y Groes climb to tackle. One hour and a bit after starting from Bala and all riders were safely in Dinas Mawddwy, Andy Hunt arriving a wee bit earlier than everyone else!

Many thanks to Andy for organising the trip and we look forward to many more in the future. Any suggestions on the next venue? How about Llangollen?

Other participants – Paul Brewer, Martin Jones.
