16th March 2009
Four Ystwyth riders started last saturdays round of the Shrewsbury Circuit Races, namely Mike Tarling, Kev Jones, Martin Jones and Scott Tompsett and they all got stuck in once again.
Martin stopped after 35 mins feeling rough but in the bunch sprint Kev got 6th and Mike got 10th so a few points in the bag for both of them.
The race saw another large field of 63 riders this week over a distance of 1hr + 5laps and the stiff wind up the finishing straight made it a much harder race than last week. There were quite a few attacks as the race wore on but none lasted more than a couple of laps at most. With about 15 minutes to go Mike countered a move and stayed away for the best part of a lap and a half with a rider from Wolverhampton Wheelers but it was always going to come back together. In the sprint Kev and Mike were really well placed and were looking for a top 5 until some rider from Lichfield pushed Mike off the track!
He managed to get back on and sneak 10th and the final ranking point while Kev did a great job to get 6th.
On to the final round next week and anything less than a top 5 will be a disappointment, such is the expectation now amongst the riders.
So far Sean Grosvenor, Dewi Hughes, Kev Jones and Mike Tarling have all got a top 10 so its proving a good circuit for the club!

Ystwyth riders in the points at first road race of 2009
Over 60 starters made this three race series opener a difficult race to navigate with the usual spills and near misses on the tight Sundorn circuit.
Fortunately the Ystwyth train avoided all the troubles and were well represented in the thick of the action all afternoon. This race was always going to end in a mass sprint, despite a few brave attempts by some riders to break away and it was John Wylie (M&D Cycles) taking the win from the rest of the field with our own Sean Grosvenor (Llanidloes) a magnificent third after a leadout from Michael Tarling who himself managed 11th.
Dewi Hughes followed up last years 4th place with 5th this time meaning Ystywth had two riders in the top five in a 60 man field!

Martin Jones & Kev Jones (no relation according to our most recent records) also competed and finished comfortably in the bunch having had a fine fledgling workout for 2009.
With Paul Jones out through illness this time, next week (14th) should see an even stonger Ystwyth team taking part.
