Dewi fires the fifth engine
Dewi Hughes provided the ride of the evening in the Ystwyth 10 mile time trial at Llanbadarn & Lovesgrove, cutting 40 seconds off an already impressive personal best time to come second on the night and become second fastest rider on the course in 2009 with 23minutes and six seconds. Dewi now only needs another seven seconds to graduate to a 22 minute time. Danny Thorogood was again too strong for the rest on the night, and his 22.18 means that he will be eyeing a future 21 minute time on the course.
Newcomer Simon Tudor improved again to hit the 24 minute mark with 24.21 and Andy Cox also made it under 25 minutes with a PB of 24.56
Rhys Thomas rode strongly to become fastest rider in the 25-26 minute category just ahead of Colin Armstrong whilst Dave Lanford led home a quintet of riders in the 27-28 minute category with 27.10 from Gari Jones’s PB of 27.13.
There were some notable improvements further down the list with Dan Field knocking well over a minute off his PB with 29.15, narrowly losing out to Amanda Binks (29.11) for the 29-30 minute category. Perhaps the other ‘ride of the night’ was Brian Ashton who is a regular 30 minute man, only turning the form book on its head with a fantastic 28.28. Kim Jones also knocked a huge chunk off her own PB with 34.26 as did Paul Tedaldi with 31.05.
In open events, two Ystwyth members rode the Port Talbot Wheelers 50 mile time trial last weekend and both came away with sub two hour times. Both Paul Jones and Andy Hunt hit the sub two hour milestone, which involved keeping a pace similar to a 10 mile time trial, for 50 miles to average over 25 mph. Paul finished the event in 1 hour 58 mins 13 seconds for 9th place on the day, with Andy in 11th with 1 hour 59 mins 21seconds.
Colin Armstrong represented Ystwyth CC in the Welsh Veterens Road Race Championships near Usk, whilst Andy Cox and Ray Robinson are due to ride the national 24 hour time trial championships in Merseyside shortly, which is the longest continuous time trial event on the calendar. This ultra endurance event measures distance covered in 24 hours, with the winning distance in previous years being in the region of 470 miles, the pair will be targeting their own personal goals in this unique event.
